Lodge or Cage?

July 18, 2007

The Mountain Lodge — mmm, the word ‘lodge’ is a little bit misleading. This was my home when I was spending a month at C.A.R.E. The right side is the old part and on the left is the “new” part. The wooden part is a double story with the kitchen and dining area at the bottom and 3 bedrooms, a bathroom and living area at the top. The new part has 2 bathrooms and 4 bedrooms.

The Mountain Lodge is enclosed in a wire mesh to keep the troop of wild baboons out. But unfortunately they figured out how to get in one morning. Absolute chaos — food everywhere! We got them out and luckily neither man nor baboon got hurt in the process.

To get cellphone reception I usually had to stand on the second floor of the Lodge AND climb up against the wire like a little monkey. And still then you might not get any signal. Or we could’ve walked up the hill to one specific rock, stand on that rock and then have signal. But at night it was too dangerous to set foot out of out wire enclosed Lodge. Elephants and lions roam the nature reserve freely and you don’t want to bump into any of them while chatting on your cellphone.

At least I could call the Mountain Lodge my home away from home for a couple of weeks.

  5. Could you possibly send me some pictures of the accomodation also? I am going to CARE in the fall and would really like to see what I’m in for. It sounds like you really enjoyed yourself. Any information you could give me would be so great. Thanks!

    • Hi! You are going to absolutely love CARE. Add me as a friend on facebook and on there you can check out all my pictures. You’re going to fall in love with the baboons and the place itself.
